If I may as you–What will you choose between -Fad & Classic? Well, you might ask me why am I asking this question in the blog? So let me tell you the inside of term “Fad /Classic”. Fad stands for the momentary fashion whereas classic exists throughout our wardrobe. Similarly, Power looms which is fad here, supply 70% of Indian textiles today as compare to handloom, which is classic here, which has shrunk to 30% and gradually shrinking day by day. The position of handlooms in the socio-political arena and the sector’s annual contribution to the economy cannot be objectively stated. The reasons are hidden in narratives of productivity and efficiency fuelled by the discourse of progress and development. These factors have hampered growth in the handloom industry and pushed it into the margins. As handloom weaving is present mostly in rural areas and is primarily a household activity. However, it does not imply that weavers are independent producers, so they eventually end up getting a small reward for their hard work. In spite of Handloom Reservation Act, introduced by different governments for handloom time to time from year 2000,2003,2015, where idea is to promote the Indian. The objective of growth is sought to be achieved by providing a unique identification for handloom products, thus protecting it from mechanical imitations. Handloom business is not just an emotional idea, rather observing handloom business across the country, it is clearly stated that handloom is a good business proposition, as there is no decrease in demand for handloom, both at the national and international level. Surely we know there is no other nation in the world, which has as many working handlooms as we have. Instead of destroying this rich heritage, we should build it as a proud national lifestyle experience for everyone.
